The concept of the highly sensitive person (HSP) was formally introduced by psychologist Dr Elaine Aron in a seminal 1997 scientific publication co-authored with her husband, Arthur Aron. Their research established sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) as a distinct personality trait characterised by deeper cognitive processing of stimuli, heightened emotional reactivity, and increased awareness of environmental subtleties. A groundbreaking aspect of their work was demonstrating that high sensitivity is not synonymous with introversion—while approximately 70% of HSPs identify as introverts, 30% are extroverts who thrive in social settings but still experience sensory and emotional overwhelm more acutely than non-HSPs.
Since its initial identification, numerous studies have validated the existence of this temperament trait, which affects an estimated ~20% of the population. For individuals who identify as HSPs, understanding this trait provides a transformative framework for self-awareness. It allows them to reinterpret past experiences—such as being labelled "too sensitive" or struggling with overstimulation—through a lens of neurobiological predisposition rather than personal failing. Armed with this knowledge, HSPs can design lifestyles that honour their needs, such as prioritising downtime, setting boundaries against sensory overload, and leveraging their strengths in creativity, empathy, and attention to detail. Equally important, recognising that non-HSPs process the world differently fosters mutual understanding and reduces interpersonal friction.
For those close to HSPs, educating themselves about the trait improves communication by reframing behaviours like emotional intensity or avoidance of chaotic environments as innate traits rather than intentional aloofness. Societies benefit from the complementary strengths of both HSPs and non-HSPs: the former contribute nuanced perception and conscientious decision-making, while the latter often excel in high-pressure, fast-paced scenarios.
The courses offered on this platform are grounded in peer-reviewed research, including Dr Aron’s ongoing studies, and incorporate evidence-based strategies from her bestselling works. By bridging scientific insights with practical applications, these resources empower HSPs to thrive without suppressing their sensitivity and help allies create supportive environments.
Since 2012, I have taught the concept of the Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) to over 120 adults through continuing education programs. On this site, I share the full range of resources I’ve developed for courses of varying durations and depths, designed to foster self-awareness and practical strategies. I hope you find these tools useful, and if so, I encourage you to share your knowledge with those who might benefit. Participants in my courses regularly report transformative results, including increased self-confidence and the ability to design lifestyles aligned with their sensitivity, paving the way for a more fulfilling future.
